I am torn about Obama's education ideas. I am thrilled that he has taken an interest in education, and that he has made it one of his priorities, but I think some of his proposals are not feasible or fair. One suggestion that hit me first was his proposal of a longer day for students. The United States has worked for decades to limit the length of workers days to 8 hours, to ensure they get reasonable breaks. And yet here we are talking about not extending those same rights to our children. How can we expect children as young as 6 spend 10 hours a day in a class? That is ridiculous. And don't get me started on the lack of recesses. I also question how they would tie pay and incentives to student performance. That is so subjective, and therre are so many variables. I don't know if people who are not in education fully appreciate how hard this would be to implement fairly.
The Gates Foundation also had a response to Obama's speech. You can read about it here http://www.gatesfoundation.org/press-releases/Pages/president-obama-economy-and-education-090310.aspx
