I have worked 75 days, and considering I didn't get added to the sub list until the 15th day of school, I think that is pretty successful.I have subbed in 3 districts, numerous schools, kindergarten through 12th grade. Music, PE, special ed, regular classrooms, behaviorally challenged, adult special ed transition center and more. I have gone into classrooms Mrs. Mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14088739114009642189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5133198745493784479.post-33085051266882574682009-09-07T15:37:00.000-07:002009-09-07T15:38:14.300-07:00Getting TogetherPerhaps if we get together we can keep our heads above water with this work thing. What do you think? Isn't it time for a lunch together?Ann Glaserhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07111723347438363452noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5133198745493784479.post-39620244636778342902009-09-07T15:36:00.001-07:002009-09-07T15:36:43.737-07:00Subbing SnafusI also have had this problem. I thought I had everything in place to sub in my kid's school district-I did finish the application process back in June and find that they have closed the sub pool. This is in spite of the fact that I know teachers that would like to hire me and told me to give them my number. I was told to call back in Oct and perhaps the situation will be changed. Then I triedAnn Glaserhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07111723347438363452noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5133198745493784479.post-73751863726453282262009-08-21T17:14:00.000-07:002009-08-21T18:02:26.419-07:00SubbingIt is even hard to get called up for sub jobs right now in the great Northwest. The district I would really like to work at, where my kids go to school, is only accepting sub applicants if you have a special ed, music or PE Endorsement, or secondary math or science endorsements. Most of my fellow graduates that I have talked to haven't heard any information about subbing either.I decided to be Mrs. Mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14088739114009642189noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5133198745493784479.post-54959596373919773992009-08-10T14:33:00.000-07:002009-08-10T14:43:55.909-07:00back to school --I have decided I am like a woman who has just found out she is pregnant. I go out and longingly look at school supplies instead of baby clothes. I look at the stickers and pencils, put them in my cart, reasoning that they will be good for any age. No matter if I get a job teaching first or fifth, I can use stickers and pencils. Then I move onto books. This one looks good. I can envision Mrs. Mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14088739114009642189noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5133198745493784479.post-43904460970676032832009-04-21T20:00:00.000-07:002009-04-21T20:17:16.355-07:00Solo TeachingI am spending more time in the classroom on my own. It is great, and scary. I am finding I have a tendency to over plan my weeks. I have too much stuff to do, and too little time to accomplish everything. I feel like I should be able to cover things in more depth, so they really understand it. My Master Teacher says I need to remember they are second graders, in many of these things we are Mrs. Mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14088739114009642189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5133198745493784479.post-30611007884070721722009-03-31T20:46:00.000-07:002009-03-31T21:00:39.780-07:00First Week Full Time Student TeachingSo I am done with my first full week of student teaching. (YAY!) Part of me is so excited to be there every day, part of me was exhausted and longing for the week to be over. Of course I was battling a terrible cold all week, and the kids and I could really tell when the cold medicine was starting to wear off, as I became more stuffy and more hoarse as the hours ticked by. We had our last classes, all my assignments are done and turned in, and I find myself asking - "what do I do now?". You would think I would be dancing around the house singing and laughing and cheering that I made it this far and have no more classes, yet I find myself stopping and thinking, in an almost panicky sort of way " What am I Mrs. Mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14088739114009642189noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5133198745493784479.post-70389892840678303522009-03-13T13:58:00.000-07:002009-03-13T14:00:29.247-07:00What the economic stimulus means for education...Interesting stuff from Edweek.org... their most recent newsletter...Click here to view the newsletter in it's entirety...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5133198745493784479.post-76731649246396370722009-03-12T19:21:00.001-07:002009-03-12T19:26:34.478-07:00Obama's Education IdeasThis week Obama voiced some interesting ideas about education. This article from USA today has the highlights:http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2009-03-10-obamaeducation_N.htmkellihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01398038207272184411noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5133198745493784479.post-3977022946110012282009-03-12T19:17:00.000-07:002009-03-12T19:19:54.992-07:00Best Teacher WebsitesHere are some great websites for teachers. It is true blogging forces you to think about your practice and reflect before you can write. I am in one of four Kindergarten classes in my school. The teachers collaborate on tons of things; they encourage and support one another on anything from homework for the month to issues with parents. Last week I sat in on the K and 1st grade meeting. They discussed the successes and failures that they are witnessing in their kellihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01398038207272184411noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5133198745493784479.post-10508695948263491152009-02-22T19:24:00.000-08:002009-02-22T19:54:30.614-08:00Names. Helpful or Invasion of Privacy? What do you thinkSo a couple of weeks ago we had a late start and a district directed work time. They handed out lists by grade level to each of the teachers with their students' Dibble test results summarized on them. On these sheets were listed the grade level averages, and then listed each teacher, and each teacher's classroom percents for fall and winter test results. They had four columns, students at Mrs. Mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14088739114009642189noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5133198745493784479.post-69668317840423069712009-02-11T16:46:00.000-08:002009-02-11T16:49:20.330-08:00Music and dance drive academic achievementInteresting video and article from Edutopia, the George Lucas educational foundation. I liked creating a newsletter, but I also like the idea of having a class website or blog as a central place for all communication. Also, I think once a week would be appropriate to fill families in on the week's events and provide reminders/information about the kellihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01398038207272184411noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5133198745493784479.post-89431590155712346182009-01-30T16:24:00.000-08:002009-01-30T16:53:49.439-08:00Conferences and teacher/parent meetingsWe were talking in class today about conferences and other teacher's meetings with parents. I have been thinking alot about it, and feel like I need to let all my fellow future teachers know how the parents you meet with feel. I am a white, middle class, college educated woman, with a supportive family who loved school, and has nothing but positive memories of school. Can I apply what I am reading and experiencing in the classroom on my own and in my own future classroom? It is one thing to read about something, but it is quite another to put it into practice (sometimes on the spot)!I think it gets back to not being afraid to ask for help. How much is enough? Robin brought up the fact that many teachers only have a "2" on the Vanhealy (?) geometry scale so how are their students going to get to a "3" to make it in that subject in later grades? Some of us already are realizing that we do not know enough math for what the kids Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5133198745493784479.post-44236671215584764592009-01-24T17:45:00.000-08:002009-01-24T17:48:55.703-08:00The "Obama Effect" for test scoresThere is an interesting article about the possible positive side effects of having an African American in the highest office in the country. We had a staff meeting after school and the principal said she had bad news...then talks of budget cuts progressed and she informed the staff that a "seniority" list was being created at the district office because new teachers were on the chopping block.
